1. What did you do in 2007 that you'd never done before?

Taught someone how to play cribbage. This is something of a big deal, really, in that my family plays cribbage the way that some families watch TV; up until this year, however, it had never occurred to me that someone else might want to learn it. It went pretty well, all things considered.

2. Did you keep your New Years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

I don't make them, so there's nothing to keep. I did manage to get an A in Calc 2, and I did sign up for Calc 3, so I guess I'm doing the things I might have resolved to do, if I made resolutions.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Brandon and Jennifer had Colten and Sienna on June 5. Scott and Takako had Tetsuo on July 4. David and Elaine had Callum on August 11. Michael and Alicja had Maya on August 22. Five kids. That's one busy year.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

Roman Meshon died on September 17. He was 36 years old. I miss him.

5. What countries did you visit?

Japan and Mexico.

6. What would you like to have in 2008 that you lacked in 2007?

More actual vacation, less familial obligatory vacation. Nothing personal, family, but it would be nice to get away for a bit.

7. What date from 2007 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

Since none actually come to mind, I'm guess none of them. That's all right; there were plenty of good moments.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Got promoted from my previous title to a position more accurately reflecting what I do.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Didn't keep up with that weight-lifting regimen I'd set up for myself. Hope springs eternal for 2008.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

My coworker broke my right middle finger in March (it was an accident, and 95% my own damn fault). Hilarity ensued.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

Toss up between Yoko's MacBook, subsequently named Josephine, and our Wii. On second thought, the Wii wins. Man, that thing is incredible.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?

My sister-in-law, Yara, got her Blue Belt. That's pretty damn awesome.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

The guy who vetoed the health plan for poor children and purposefully lied about how it would have expanded coverage to the well-off. Douche-bag's just not a strong enough word.

14. Where did most of your money go?

Savings! No, really, we did a good job this year.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

The 2008 elections. Man, I don't know if I'm voting for Clinton or Obama, but I'm thrilled that those are honest-to-goodness choices.

16. What song will always remind you of 2007?

akron/family's "I've Got Some Friends." No, really, where the hell did that come from?

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
-happier or sadder?

I'd say more content. Happier is a tricky thing.

-thinner or fatter?

About the same, but somewhat differently constructed.

-richer or poorer?

Richer, but don't even think of hitting us up for a loan.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Climbed! Travelled!

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Waited.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

Spent it with my family in San Diego. We had a great time, and no one got hurt until my dad cut about a third of the way into the tendon of his left pinkie finger. Fortunately, Yoko and I were already back in Oakland by that time. Still, what's Christmas without blood?

21. How will you be spending New Year's Eve?

At home with the love of my life.

22. Did you fall in love in 2007?

Over and over again, every year.

23. How many one-night stands?

Pfft. It is not true that gentlemen prefer blondes; gentlemen prefer their wives.

24. What was your favourite TV program?

Supernatural. Man, those guys can write.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

Hate is overrated. I'd just as soon not think about them at all.

26. What was the best book you read?

Oddly enough, Lanark by Alasdair Gray. I say oddly because I don't pretend to have enjoyed the book, but it is well-written.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?

Grieg's Peer Gynt Suite. I simply was not aware of how intricate it is.

28. What did you want and get?

A promotion.

29. What did you want and not get?

More time.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Honestly cannot remember, and 37.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

Stopping Roman from going surfing, but I don't blame myself for that. Some things you cannot control.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2007?

Einstein was right.

34. What kept you sane?

My loverly wife. That, and remembering that this too shall pass.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Dunno about fancy, but I'm pleased as punch to see Kevin Rudd take over as PM in Australia.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?

Burma, Burma, Burma. It gives me chest pains just thinking of the pressure we might have been able to bring to bear if we weren't up to our metaphors in the quagmire that is Iraq.

37. Who did you miss?

I saw a fair number of my important people this year. I didn't get to see Darth and Katie, so I'm going to say them.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

I didn't have a chance to see her, but Maya Elizabeth Kahn was born while I was in Japan, so she's pretty darn new, and I managed to score some righteous cigars with which to fete her Papa. Oh, and I met [livejournal.com profile] narwhale, [livejournal.com profile] tagryn, and [livejournal.com profile] donnafair, and they're all three of them spiffy folks!

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007:

Never forget that there are things that cannot be overcome by irrational exuberance and pollyanna-ish enthusiasm. Take risks, but calculate them some; listen to those who have gone before, if only to pick the bones of the shreds of truth they may have forgotten. And always, ALWAYS remember: do NOT swim against the riptide current; swim across until you break free, and then swim for shore.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

"I've got some friends that you should meet,
All good men, all good women."
(akron/family, "I've Got Some Friends")

"Saltwater
Oh how I miss your misty kisses
Saltwater
Oh what expressionless bliss
Is this?"
(The Cat Empire, Saltwater)
