More Music, Less Thinking, Please

What the hell is so wrong and yet so right about musicians from countries that purport to speak English against all evidence to the contrary? I don't know, but whatever it is, mclusky's got it. Their sound is like Helmet minus the social commentary, plus... more.

They put me in mind of the very first time I heard the Descendents: pumped, jazzed, inexplicably happy. Be forewarned, not only do their lyrics really make no sense, they also sometimes include profanity.

Download "Lightsabre Cocksucking Blues" and "To Hell With Good Intentions" as mp3s, listen to "Alan Is A Cowboy Killer" via RealAudio, and watch the videos for "Undress For Success" and "To Hell With Good Intentions" via RealVideo. Lyrics can be found here and here.

Ooh, anything that is comparable to Helmet can't be too bad. Consider my interest piqued.

I certainly see the similarity to Helmet, but Helmet is about eight billion times tigher than those guys. I think I'll go rip all my old Helmet discs for to be listening at work tomorrow while keeping young mclusky on the back burner.

You are, of course, absolutely correct; Helmet is much tighter than mclusky. So what the hell is it about mclusky that grabs my attention? At the risk of more (and possibly incorrect) name dropping, they strike a chord with me along the same resonance as the Stranglers and Sigue Sigue Sputnik. There's this eerily constructed nonsense about them that just grabs me at some level.

Hm. What's up with that?

I hear a strong resemblance to Big Black. In fact, from those two tracks, I'd describe them as 1/3 Helmet and 2/3 Big Black.
