More on Van Helsing

Right. In the establishing scene, when Van Helsing takes on Mr. Hyde, is it just me or are there significant references to Edgar Allen Poe going on here? The initial murder seemed taken directly from Murders in the Rue Morgue, and Hyde himself intones "The bells! The bells!" as the bells of Notre Dame send him reeling.

Of course, the entire movie was chock-full of horror references, so what do I expect, really?

By the bye, when Kate Beckinsale hits the werewolf Van Helsing with the antidote, and he rushes up and crushes her and then turns, holding her dead body in his arms and howls (howls), with the full moon framed in the window behind him-- that's when the audience burst out laughing. What a beautiful, delightfully over-the-top moment! I hope the other audiences Got It the same way we did.

There's a neato, non-spoilerific interview with the guy who's writing the comic book version of Van Helsing over at UGO.
