New Old Meme: Roger Ebert's List of Great Movies

My dear friend and fellow pirate, [livejournal.com profile] therobbergirl, recently shared a meme listing a bunch of movies ("Mark the ones you've seen"; you know how these things go); we agreed that the list seemed pretty random. Here, by contrast is a more arbitrary list: Roger Ebert's List of Great Movies (last updated in 2005).

There are 334 movies on this list, and, since it's Ebert, the list presumably includes films you can't stand and excludes films you thought were the bestest thing ever; one of my favorites, The Princess Bride, for example, didn't make it. Bold the ones you've seen and post your numbers: I've seen 104 of these.

Meme: 10-Day Meme Thing, Day 7

Last one was too easy. Let's see if I break a sweat on this one.

10 Days, 10 Prompts
Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you'd never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)
Day Seven: Four turn offs.
Day Eight: Three turn ons.
Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.
Day Ten: One confession.

1. Willful ignorance. And by the way, we have the Internet these days, so there's really no need to be ignorant unless you're doing it on purpose.

2. Droning on without a point or at least occasional punch lines. I like to interact: engage me, and I'll be happy to listen and participate; straight out lecture me (outside of an actual lecture), and you've lost me.

3. Emotional games. Life's too short: if you're angry, tell me, and maybe we can work it out. No passive-aggressiveness, please.

4. A lack of a sense of humor. Best advice I got while I was teaching in Japan was to avoid poison apples: those individuals who are going to have a bad time no matter what and are determined to drag everyone around them down with them. I've gotten pretty good, over the years, at identifying, quarantining, and ultimately dropping people like that.

Next up: a lighter note!

Meme: 10-Day Meme Thing, Day 6

You know, the whole sequential days thing is just a trick by the Man. I'm rockin' it LJ-time.

Yoko, my brothers, my dad, and you.

Meme: 10-Day Meme Thing, Day 5

"Days" are becoming a bi-daily sort of thing.

[livejournal.com profile] therobbergirl said it very well, so I'll paraphrase: every choice I've made in my life has been so inextricably tangled up with who I've become that changing one thing or another would result in a different me. That said, if I could undo the harm without losing the lessons:

1. I would never have played games with C and D's hearts; I was young, feckless, and self-destructive, and they both paid the price.
2. I would not have cut off C; I was young, cowardly, and unthinking.
3. I would not have laughed when J told me what he did; I would have instead tried talking to him and reasoning with him.
4. I would not have crashed the car.
5. I would not have let my infatuation with L get in the way of my relationship with V.
6. I would not have hesitated.

Don't worry, none of these things apply to people on LJ, and two-thirds of them date back nearly 20 years; in most cases, I've made apologies, and, in all cases, I've come to closure.

Now, more importantly, if I were going to go back in time and rectify matters, I'd make sure to bring winning lottery numbers.

Meme: 10-Day Meme Thing, Day 4

Yeah, yeah, technically day 5, but Yoko had (a very minor and completely successful) surgery yesterday, so I'm giving myself a bye.

10 Days, 10 Prompts
Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)
Day Seven: Four turn offs.
Day Eight: Three turn ons.
Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.
Day Ten: One confession.

In no particular order:
1. The weather, especially on cold days.
2. The monumental task of providing enough resources to the ever-growing population.
3. Religion. Generally, other people's. They're like these amazing thought-exercises: take one thing as given, and then try extrapolating to see how far you can go within the realm of logic.
4. My health. This whole turning 40 thing was a little bit much, if you ask me.
5. Things I should be doing.
6. Incremental improvements and tweaks.
7. Books, movies, TV, webcomics, news, etc. Shiny things are shiny.

Hm, this was an odd one, almost the opposite of the previous ones in that it required a certain detachment to get honest answers.

Meme: 10-Day Meme Thing, Day 3

Continuing the series:

10 Days, 10 Prompts
Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)
Day Seven: Four turn offs.
Day Eight: Three turn ons.
Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.
Day Ten: One confession.

1. Be kind, thoughtful, funny, and smart, not to mention beautiful, talented, and quick.
2. Think things through, and make me think of things in ways I haven't before.
3. Make me roar with laughter; I am a funny person (and modest!), and I like making people laugh, so I appreciate it all the more when the tables are turned.
4. Put up with me when possible, but point out my foibles when I go past the line.
5. Travel with me through rough seas, long nights, odd flophouses, spectacular moments of grace, and at least four of the seven continents.
6. Have strong convictions, high standards, and a strong sense of justice and fairness, but apply reason and compassion to these in reasonable proportions.
7. Win the hearts of my family.
8. In short, be Yoko.

Meme: 10-Day Meme Thing, Day 1

On this boat a little late, but hey, any port in the liquor cabinet, wot wot. Kudos to [livejournal.com profile] aceofkittens and [livejournal.com profile] emmiepie for bringing this up:

10 Days, 10 Prompts
Day One: Ten things you want to say to ten different people right now.
Day Two: Nine things about yourself.
Day Three: Eight ways to win your heart.
Day Four: Seven things that cross your mind a lot.
Day Five: Six things you wish you’d never done.
Day Six: Five people who mean a lot (in no order whatsoever)
Day Seven: Four turn offs.
Day Eight: Three turn ons.
Day Nine: Two images that describe your life right now, and why.
Day Ten: One confession.

The tradition seems to be to write the things without directing them, so away we go:
1. I rarely get to see you in person, but when I do, I am reminded, yet again, of what a wonderful person you are and how lucky I am to have you in my life.
2. Thank you for not killing me or leaving me on the side of the road when I was of a certain age and temperament; I didn't truly appreciate your patience at the time, but I do now.
3. You're an amazing person, but you need to relax and let yourself go with the flow more often, or you're going to pop like a too-tightly-wound spring.
4. I've never understood the path you went down and I worry sometimes that I may have pushed you down it, but I miss the friend I once had.
5. You are evil and wicked and must be destroyed; also, I wish you every happiness in your new life.
6. Giving you what you ask for will not satisfy you or help you in the long run; I'll not throw good money after bad.
7. I wanted to believe in you, against my better judgement, but again and again you have failed to stand strong in the face of adversity; be bold, or I will wash my hands of you.
8. You're a liar, a cheat, and a hypocrite; worst of all, you've lied to yourself, cheated your own convictions, and betrayed the principles that made you bearable. I wish you a soul-searing moment of clarity.
9. I'm sorry I woke you from your slumber; it was too early, and I was too impatient.
10. Sweet heart, sweet love, you make it all bearable and light. Thank you.

The Animation Meme

Confession (though not a revelation): even though I liked Anime when I was in high school, and even though I lived in Japan for six years, I generally don't dig Anime. Maybe it's because I long ago left the target demographic, but still.

Whew, that out of the way, here's that Animation meme that's been making the rounds, courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] therobbergirl:

Read/Unread Book List

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] rimrunner, source of many good timewasters.

These are the top 106 books most often marked as "unread" by LibraryThing's users (as of today). As usual, bold what you have read, italicize those you started but couldn't finish, and strike through what you couldn't stand. Add an asterisk to those you've read more than once. Underline those on your to-read list.
