Weather

Interesting clouds passing over Oakland tonight. Some clouds tell you to get an umbrella. Some clouds tell you that it's fast approaching winter. These clouds, well, these clouds speak with potential energy.

These are the clouds that stalked the walls of Troy the night before some Greeks came sightseeing. These are the clouds that the native west indians walked under the day before three wayward ships showed up on the horizon. These are the clouds Hrothgar pronounced interesting the night before Grendel came to dinner. These are the clouds the natives of Eurasia cowered under the night before the Mongols got word that Genghis Khan was having a tummmy ache. These are the clouds that stroll along your streets when the old ladies on the corner mutter about the pricking of their thumbs.

These clouds are not themselves portents of ill on the wind. Rather, they bespeak of the potential for mighty change. The walls may fall; the world may change; the night may bring monsters or heroes, good news or bad; kings may fall or find themselves made.

I love these clouds.

Since I'm not there, I don't exactly know what clouds you mean, but it does remind me of the feeing I had during the Oakland hills fire in, um, when was that, 1991 or so? As I'm sure you know, the wind was blowing oddly that day, changing its usual direction, and from my house in West Berkeley all I could see was a menacing cloud rising up in the north east. I was working on a paper, appropriately, on storms in Tale of Genji and the idea of extinguishing passion in a catharsis. As I typed, the firestorm raged, and my bf and our mutual friend mkb went off and played with fire. I remember feeling that odd energy of something about to happen. And it did.

Clouds kick ass.
