I was just thinking, I know a lot of Eric/ks, but you're the only one who spells your first name the same way my boyf does. (There were also, at last count, one cousin, two fairly close friends, one classmate, and probably several cow orkers—the Scandinavian connection.)

Yeah, it's the Danish thing. True Eriks (the ones who spell the name correctly) understand that the misspellings are a sign of character deficiency.

He does have some Danish ancestry, come to that. Lots of other stuff, too; he's a mutt.

His mother, however, likes mythology as much as I do, and named him after Erik the Red (who may have spelled it Eírik, but anyway). I like to tease him about being named after someone who's mostly famous for losing his temper in a really spectacular fashion.

Oddly enough, there are those who also spell it "Eric the Red." Really, this whole transliteration thing is an awful bother. :)

Remember that Erik the Red was also an amazing real estate broker: who else could sell a frozen waste as Greenland?

True, although some evidence suggests that at the time there was rather more green and rather less frozen waste. (Climate change: it's not just for the post-industrial era anymore!)
