Seal of Idiocy

White House sends C&D letter to The Onion over use of Presidential Seal

...there's a certain level at which this makes sense, of course, but c'mon, it's funny.

I can kinda understand it, especially if you're getting folks from other countries getting directed to Onion pages without realizing its a comedy site & taking the stuff there for actual news. It shouldn't take much for the Onion folks to just come up with some parody of the Seal and use that...not that that'll solve the problem of folks who don't know what the Seal looks like in the first place & will take any semblance of it to be The Real Thing. Oh well.

Again, like I said, it makes sense on a certain level, but then again...

Nah, it's just too absurd to even be funny. Really.

Nah.

This won't pass. They don't get to prohibit anything.

This comes down to the fundamental right to free speech, and more to the point, it even passes the most conservative of reactionary tests: It's POLITICAL speech. Further, it's SATIRE, which trumps any kind of copyright or trademark, and they're clearly NOT trying to pretend to be anything other than what they are: a satirical newspaper.

There is no way that the White House can even remotely get away with this baloney, and they should be slapped down hard for it.

And this is pretty much were I am, too. Thanks, Foomf.
