The House of Representatives is currently considering H.R. 3261 ("To prohibit the misappropriation of certain databases."). This legislation would prohibit people from using information that appears in a database that a corporation claims to own.

Go here to read an article by Phyllis Schlafly on the subject.

If this legislation passes, a corporation that regularly publishes collections of, say, municipal codes could sue you if you posted a municipal code relevant to some lawsuit you're in the middle of on your LiveJournal. If some corporation starts publishing collections of legislation appearing before the House of Representatives, I could be sued for posting the body of H.R. 3261.

This law threatens the transparency of our legislative system and opens the door to making the laws of the land only accessible to those who can pay. Contact your Representative to let them know that you do not approve of selling our rights to free information about our government to corporations with deep pockets.
