American soldiers are dying in Iraq. This does not unduly upset me. I am saddened by their loss and sorrow of their families, but death is one of the risks undertaken when a soldier signs on with the armed forces. These soldiers are dying in the line of duty, and they are working very hard to make Iraq a better place right now.
What outrages me is that the current administration is engaged in a policy of dishonoring our soldiers. The President refuses to meet the airplanes bearing the dead soldiers home. The Pentagon keeps the numbers of wounded under wraps. The media are prevented from showing pictures of the coffins of our dead soldiers being returned to their homes.
If you must send men and women to their deaths for your agenda, have the guts and decency to honor them when they return on their shields rather than with them.
This is what a row of soldiers' coffins looks like when it's loaded on a plane:

If this disturbs you or weakens your resolve to have our soldiers over there, then stop pretending you support the war. If this frightens you, then stop sending troops over there. Do not simply pretend the coffins do not exist on the basis that their very existence might cost you votes.
But if you would honor these men and women, then look long and hard at this picture, and remember who lies inside these coffins. Take to heart all that they have sacrificed.
That's the very least they deserve.
