Dogville and The Incredibles
Nov. 7th, 2004 12:21 amDogville, by Lars von Trier, is a brutal, savage movie, but it has, arguably, the best pound-per-pound payoff I've seen in a long time, so if you can bear to sit through the entire thing, and I freely admit that almost turned it off in disgust, the payoff is worth it. Well, it was for me, anyway. Be aware that Nicole Kidman is subjected to rape, cruelty, abuse, betrayal, and humiliation, so I recognize that for some of you gentle readers no payoff will be worth sitting through this. Also, be aware that the production quality is low, and the entire enterprise is best described as a movie of a stage production; that should discourage some of you right off the bat.
If you're looking for, well, incredible production quality, a brilliant screenplay, some laughs, some action, and just a whole heap of fun, brave the lines and go see The Incredibles. This is quite simply the best cinema-going experience I've had this year. Two thumbs up, and no caveats.
