Congrats to Stan Lee
Jan. 20th, 2005 02:30 pmAccording to Slashdot, Stan Lee has won his suit against Marvel for 10% of the profits for TV, movie, and merchandising deals for his creations (including, among other things, Spiderman and the Fantastic Four). Marvel, of course, is appealing the ruling.
Several people have pointed out that Stan Lee's partners in crime, Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko were equally responsible for creating some of the very characters Lee is demanding his share of the profits for; others have pointed out that Lee was clever enough to get his share staked out in a contract, so it's easier for him to make a claim on the profits than it would be for Ditko or the estate of Kirby.
Do any of you True Believers happen to know if the text of Stan Lee's contract is available on the Internet? I'm thinking it would make interesting reading at this point, especially for any of you creators out there looking to make sure you get your own out of any deals involving your creations.
