A baby hippo rescued after floods in Kenya last week has befriended a 100-year-old tortoise in Kenya.

Owen, the one-year-old hippo, and Mzee (Swahili for "old man"), the 100-year-old tortoise. Too cool.

that is just incredibly cute. :-) my favorite part of the article, though, is the last sentence:

'In 2002, a lioness at Samburu National Park adopted a succession of baby oryx.'

"Adopting", or "farming", you decide. :-)

Hee, hee. This reminds me of a story they tell at the Wild Animal Park, down in San Diego: Apparently, the local deer had figured out that they could easily hop the fences and get into the more exotic animals' feed troughs. The deer then discovered that the shortest way to get in was through the lion enclosure. The first time a deer jumped the fence into that enclosure, the lion just sat still and let it be. Same thing for the second, third, etc. After a while, the deer came to view the lion enclosure as safe passage. And that's when the lion very nonchalantly took one down.

Clever creatures, those lions.
