To answer ctiee, there's an unfortunate but inescapable affiliation of the eagle with a previous German party: If you get to see film from the Nuremberg rallies during the Nazi years, the eagle was very prominent in National Socialist iconology.
That may be more of a phoenix than an eagle, but it's so stylized in the head I can't really tell. Looks a little like Sam the Eagle from "The Muppet Show".
Erik - here's another unfortunate image, apparently from the Maryland mass transit system: How very...Soviet. Right down to the woman holding the red flag, which it appears to be at first glance.
Wow. I let Yoko glance at this then had her turn away and tell me which country this belonged to; she immediately answered, "Soviet Union!" Truer than she knew.
