1. Who was your first prom date?
Didn't go to prom. Had a terrible crush on a taken girl, and my fallback chickened out.
2. Who was your first roommate?
My uncle, Henry, who was all of five years older than I but thought that five years somehow translated into ultra-cool. He might've gotten away with it, if he hadn't been so terribly insecure. He still has issues. I hope he finds his balance.
3. What alcoholic beverage did you drink when you got drunk the first time?
Red, red wine, at the tender age of two, when my parents had a wine tasting party, and I wandered around finishing off the glasses that everyone kept leaving around. Apparently, they found me stumbling in very cute, but rather pitiful, circles. Red wine is also the first alcohol I was sick on, but that's another story.
4. What was your first job?
Odd jobs around the house for nickels, dimes, quarters, and, that holy grail of childhood, dollars. My mom had the brilliant idea of putting a bunch of jobs (and their monetary value) on pieces of paper in a Job Jar, which we kids would then draw from on lazy summer days. I doubt we were really as much help as she'd paid for, but it kept us out of trouble.
5. What was your first car?
1968 Oldsmobile 98, gun-metal grey. Great acceleration, heavy as brick, ugly as sin; the kind of car that expensive cars would shy away from. $1,000 from a little old lady in Rancho Bernardo. Suffered a horrible death when a Toyota pickup did a 90 degree turn into its side.
6. When did you go to your first funeral?
1972. My mom's mom died of breast cancer.
7. How old were you when you first moved away from your hometown?
Four! I grew up in a military family. We moved from San Diego, CA to Dahlgren, VA. And then elsewhere pretty much every three years from then.
8. Who was your first grade teacher?
Mrs. Castlebury, who was pregnant, moody, and rapped my knuckles with a stapler.
9. Where did you go on your first ride on an airplane?
Virginia to San Diego. My mom's family lived in San Diego, so we went back there every summer while we lived on the East Coast.
10. When you snuck out of your house for the first time, who was it with?
Just me. They used to run drag races on the street just outside base in Okinawa, and I snuck out to scope it out. It wasn't nearly worth nearly breaking my bedroom window getting out.
11. Who was your first Best Friend and are you still friends?
Chris Olson. He and I were best friends in Waldorf, MD. I have no idea where he is now.
12. Where was your first sleepover?
Grandparents' house in Levittown, PA, a great place to stunt your kids' emotional growth. Good grief, the horror of the planned suburbs.
13. Who is the first person you call when you have a problem?
Yoko.
14. Who's wedding were you in the first time you were a bridesmaid or groomsmen?
My brother, Aaron's.
15. What is the first thing you do in the morning?
Shower. I can't wake up for real until I've washed my head.
16. What was the first concert you ever went to?
Oingo Boingo in San Diego.
17. First tattoo or piercing?
Left ear. Before I went to London, our drama teacher, a family man in his late 50s, swore he was going to get his ear pierced there. Three of us swore on the spot that if he did, so would we; we didn't think he'd go through with it. Two months later, he did. And so did I.
18. First celebrity crush?
Carrie Fisher, as Princess Leia in Star Wars. C'mon, I was eight. What do you expect?
19. Age of first real kiss with tongue?
16. Some very cute but utterly random and inebriated woman at a Ren Faire declared me kissable and went for it. I don't recall objecting much.
20. First crush?
Angela, the very cute black girl who lived next door to us when I was 7. I thought she was the bee's knees.
21. First REAL love?
Yoko. No matter how real the rest of them felt at the time, this is the one true thing.
