Like a Fish to Water

erikredDuring his campaign, Schwarzenegger made some promises. Among them, he promised not to cut spending for education. Then, as governor, he proposed a spending cap that included using $2 billion in backpay the state owed public schools as a reserve to supply tax cuts and emergencies.
As newly elected governor, Schwarzenegger promised to conduct an investigation into allegations against him of sexual harassment. Today he's dropped that investigation, saying that the issue had become too political.
While running, Schwarzenegger promised that he would work with the legislature to achieve compromises on the budget. When Democrats in the state legislature approached him with compromises on his proposed spending cap, he rejected them and is now threatening to take the spending cap through the initiative process.
Let's be clear: Joe Lieberman is so conservative he's stretching the word Democrat to its breaking point, and just about every Democrat in the House threw their support behind the administration's attack on Iraq. Hypocrisy is not unique to one side of the debate. That said, most people manage to make it a month without reversing themselves this dramatically.
If there's a recall next year, don't go accusing the Democrats of tit-for-tat politics. The Governor's doing a fine job of encouraging a recall all by himself.
